Recommendations to the ENVIS Centres.

TEESTA HALL (Subject Specific Centres)

             Technical Experts

i.                    Dr. Abhijit Lahiri (MoEF expert)

ii.                  Dr. D. Datta (MoEF expert)

For  Subject Specific Centres the experts stressed on issues like the proper use of  ENVIS resources, addition of certain information like arsenic poisoning, human-animal conflict in Sunderbans etc. It was also advised that some Centres should focus more on information dissemination rather than scientific research and a line should be drawn between the objectives of the ENVIS Centres and the host organizations. The experts recommended that the ENVIS Centres should focus on their main objective of information dissemination and not try and do what cannot be done and the target audience i.e.  to whom the information is being disseminated should be credited. Success stories if any achieved by the Centres from time to time to be communicated to the Ministry also. The Centres should have information on other states of the country and not confine to their own state.

For State Specific Centres recommendations were given mostly on their website. The Centres were recommended to focus on dynamic websites using modern web technologies like CMS (Content Management System) and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). The Centres were also recommended to go for security audit of the website through CERT (Computer Emergency Response Team). The use of user friendly colour font size and proper alignment of site map and search keys were recommended for the websites. The Centres were recommended that database development should comply with thematic map representation. The Centre’s were advised that larger parameters like Climate and Biodiversity should be broken down into smaller parameters for easy access to queries. The database visits should be stressed on rather than the visitor number when calculating the number of hits thus the Centre’s should be registered with www.webstatic.nic.in /www.webstat.nic.in, it was advised. It was also suggested that a link to www.india.gov.in should be provided in all the ENVIS websites.
